Welcome to the EU-US Forum Weekly Tip Sheet, your go-to product for information about the EU-US Forum and its work, timely updates on the dangerous far-left ideas coming out of the European Union, and detailed analysis on the key players influencing European politics.
We send this out weekly to keep you apprised of the most important political and policy topics in Europe as we continue to work toward our mission of exposing the EU’s radical agenda and the threat it poses to the US and Western Civilization.
1. EU’S RULE OF LAW CHECK: For decades, the bureaucrats in Brussels have ruled their member states with an iron fist, acting morally and legally superior to them in all circumstances, without much push back or a check on their own super power. And since 2020, the EU has published rule of law reports on member states, criticizing those that govern differently or have different values than them on all they are doing wrong. But now, the first rule of law report, completed by the Nézőpont Institute, on the EU and its institutions is flipping the script on the EU.
The report measured EU institutions based on that “in a state under the rule of law, ideological bias must not be allowed to translate into unlawful practices, institutions must not arbitrarily confer new powers to themselves, and they must ensure that the law is enforced in a uniform and impartial manner.” The results? “Serious violations” of those in each facet of the EU, including 18 “serious and persistent breaches” of rule of law.
The report also highlights how “the Commission’s arbitrary ‘Rule of Law Framework’ is problematic in itself, even according to the Council’s Legal Service, because it provides a basis for judging member states’ violations of ‘EU values’ in areas that are not specific EU competencies.”
The most serious violations were by the Council, which was found to be “constantly trying to circumvent the unanimity principle of the Treaties to prevent member states from using their votes on certain legislation,” and “being in breach of the “sincere cooperation” principle defined in EU law.“ They do it all to push their leftist ideological goals.
The most rule of law infringements were found in Parliament, followed by the Commission, the Court of Justice, and the Council of the EU.
2. ELECTION ENFORCEMENT: Over 600,000 non-citizens were able to vote in Sweden’s 2022 elections according to Sweden’s Deputy PM, Ebba Busch, who is now calling for tougher restrictions against non-citizen voting AND for citizenship pathway requirements to be strengthened.
In Sweden, residents who have been in the nation for three years, are able to vote, even if they are not citizens. The Deputy PM noted that, “It just doesn’t make sense [for non-citizens [to be able to] change a municipality’s entire programme.”
3. PATRIOTS CHOOSE FIRST PRESIDENT: The new conservative political group in European Parliament, Patriots for Europe, met in Paris on Saturday to choose their first President – Santiago Abascal of Spain’s VOX party.
The Patriots have become the third largest group in Parliament.
With Abascal at the helm, “the party aims to solidify this alternative majority, challenging the traditional coalition behind the European People’s Party and the socialist bloc.” The group’s statement added, “Abascal’s presidency, backed by his strong relationships with other parties and leaders across the Americas, is expected to significantly enhance collaborative efforts in defending national sovereignty, promoting prosperity, fostering mutual respect, and protecting freedom.”
Hungary’s Kinga Gál will serve as Patriot’s VP.
VDL’S COMMISSION MOVES FORWARD: The semi-new ruling coalition and Ursula von der Leyen have made a deal to approve her 26 commissioners after the far-left parties threw tantrums about ECR having one of the executive vice presidencies and threatened the stability of the entire government. In response, VDL threatened to replace one of the socialists’ own top seats, after which they conceded.
The deal still punishes conservatives, namely Hungary’s commissioner, of whom the deal took away even more of his designated low level responsibilities from his in the previous term. Meanwhile, the Commission is FILLED with SOCIALISTS who have BACKED the self-proclaimed ruling “center” party for years. Although ECR has a foot in the door with the revised ruling coalition, the EU leftist elites continue to refuse the will of the people voiced in July’s elections and it is unacceptable.
The current ruling coalition is made up of EPP, S&Ds, and Renew political groups, with the Greens recently pushed out.
During the hearings, no nominee was asked to return for more questioning after their three hour long hearing and no nominee was denied their appointed post for the first time in over 24 years.
POLITICO is predicting that the hearings will be taken even “less seriously” in five years.
The Commission holds one of the most powerful areas of influence and power as they propose and implement new laws, manage the EU’s budget, handle regulations, and represent the EU internationally.
